Newly Adopted Children from Haiti Arrive in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY - About five Utah families came home to Utah Monday afternoon with newly adopted children from Haiti. The group of orphans was scheduled to arrive on Friday, but because of customs and legal concerns, some orphans could not get out of Haiti. Children able to leave the country faced more paperwork delays once they arrived in Miami.

FOX 13 talked to Kathleen Kaiser with Wasatch International Adoption, who is coordinating the adoptions, and she said 54 of the 70 orphans that her agency is placing for adoption are in the states with 16 still in Haiti waiting for clearance.

This comes on the heels of news that ten U.S. Baptists were arrested in Haiti after trying to take 33 children. The church members, most from Idaho, said they were trying to rescue the children. The group was arrested in a bus at the border to the Dominican Republic.

The four to five Utah families with newly adopted children from Haiti are expected to arrive at the Salt Lake International Airport around noon Monday.
